[Editor’s Note: Southborough’s Knights of Columbus asked me to share their highlights from their 10th annual competition at Heritage Day.]
Bright sunshine filled the sky as enthusiastic young athletes gathered for a day of friendly competition, community spirit, and big fun at the 10th Annual Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge during Southborough’s Heritage Days Celebration.
Hosted free of charge by the Knights of Columbus Council #119—who have proudly served the Southborough community for over 130 years—this year’s event welcomed 91 young competitors, ranging from ages 5 to 16.
Each participant stepped up to the net for 10 penalty shots, aiming for high-scoring target zones worth up to 20 points per shot. Competitors took the challenge seriously while keeping the atmosphere lively and encouraging. Cheers rang out across the field as friends rooted for one another, watched the leaderboard, and celebrated every great shot!
Based on their scores, participants earned bronze, silver, or gold medals to take home as an emblem of their achievement:
- Bronze Medals: 30+ points
- Silver Medals: 60+ points
- Gold Medals: 90+ points
Top honors for the day went to Vivian and Alanna, who tied for the high score among girls with an impressive 90 points, and Calvin and Colin, who led the boys’ division with outstanding 100-point performances!
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Southborough Recreation Department for hosting another wonderful community event, and to St. Mark’s School for generously providing the use of their soccer net. Most importantly, deep appreciation goes to the dedicated volunteers and organizers whose hard work and enthusiasm made the event a resounding success for all the children involved.
