Obituary: Barbara Ann (Crosby) Malloy, 94

Barbara Crosby Malloy, wife of the late Matthew J. Malloy, Jr., of Southborough, died Sunday, October 11, peacefully at home with her family. Born on October 5, 1932, Barbara was ninety-four years old.

Barbara was one of three daughters of Joseph and Mary Crosby of South Boston. She is predeceased by her older sister, Joan Desmond of Chicago, and survived by her younger sister, Susan Davis, of Milton.

Barbara attended Archbishop Cushing Central High School in South Boston. In 1949, the summer after graduation, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Barbara took the name of Sister Margaret Mary when she made her first vows in 1951. While studying part-time at Emmanuel College, she taught first grade in elementary schools of her order—in St. Augustine’s in Lawrence; St. Mary’s in Shrewsbury; St. Mark’s in Dorchester. Barbara loved teaching. She said, “My first class lesson of every day was ‘Be considerate and kind to others,’ and my students were always good.”

Barbara received her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Emmanuel College in 1960. After eighteen years with the Sisters of Notre Dame, Barbara applied for and received a dispensation from vows. She left the order in 1967.

Barbara was teaching at the Barbieri Elementary School in Framingham when she was introduced by a childhood friend to her future husband, Matthew Malloy. The couple married on April 12, 1970, and settled in Southborough. They were together for the next fifty-four years, dividing their time between charitable work and adventure travel.

Barbara was loved by all who knew her. In addition to her sister, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, she leaves many nieces and nephews.
