Last month the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company unveiled the first-ever Gold Star Memorial train. The passenger coach bears the names of every soldier, marine, sailor and airman who lost their life while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Two long-time Southborough residents passed away this week. John Misener, 85, died on Saturday after a long illness, and Evelyn Johnson, 94, passed away on Monday after a period of declining health.

More than a year ago, the Zoning Board of Appeals voted to require the Gulbankian family to make improvements to its 40 Mt. Vickery Road property after complaints from neighbors. At the time, many of you voiced strong opinions about the process – which took more than a year – as well as the outcome. The Gulbankian family appealed, but today comes word a Worcester court has upheld the decision.

Postseason update: Boys and girls lacrosse both headed to the state finals; baseball semifinals postponed

It will be an Algonquin double-header in the lacrosse state finals later this week. Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams won their semifinal matches in East Longmeadow yesterday, setting up back-to-back championship games on Friday. The Algonquin baseball team, on the other hand, will have to wait a few more days to find out if their Cinderella season will continue after their semifinal match against Westfield was postponed due to rain.

Volunteers sought for new town manager legislation committee

Selectmen last week voted to create an ad hoc committee charged with bringing legislation to establish the position of town manager – among other changes – before voters once again. Now selectmen are looking for volunteers to join the committee.
