Town governance committee meets for the first time on Tuesday

This week Southborough will take the next step down a path that could lead to a new form of town government. The newly-formed Drafting Committee for Town Manager Legislation will meet for the first time on Tuesday.

Voters at Town Meeting last April approved the formation of the committee, whose members were appointed by Town Moderator David Coombs. Committee members include Janet Maney, Janice Conlin, Joseph Laning, Lee Bartolini, and Marnie Hoolahan.

With its charter to craft language for moving to a new town manager form of government, the committee will consider major changes to the structure of our government, including creating the position of Town Manager and increasing the size of the Board of Selectmen from three to five.

The committee will base their work on the recommendations made in the Town Governance study (available here on the town website) which was completed in 2007. The study sat on the proverbial shelf for several years until a group of residents sought to resurrect the effort last year. One of those residents, John Butler, will give a presentation at the Drafting Committee’s first meeting tomorrow night.

The Drafting Committee meets on Tuesday at 6:00 pm in the Town House Hearing Room (second floor). The meeting is open to the public. The agenda can be found here.
