Time for another open thread. For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
  • Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
  • Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
  • Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
  • Point out interesting or helpful resources

You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

OK, here’s a question from someone who lives on the town’s southern border (near the train station): There is often a heavy, industrial-grade thumping noise that seems to come from the south – from Hopkinton, specifically. It’s most noticeable on Sundays. My best guess is that this noise comes from the plant (or whatever it is) right next to the reservoir at Hopkinton State Park. Can anybody tell me whether I’m correct about the source of this sound, and what exactly it is?

I think it’s the gun club just over the border in Hopkinton. The sound you hear is probably gunfire.

I am worried about those branches that are literally hanging on the wires on route 20 near Chestnut Hill Road. Is National Grid responsible for getting those branches off the wires? One good snowstorm and out go the lights! Someone needs to be proactive here.

Minimom – do you mean Route 30? Because I’ve noticed branches on wires there and every time I drive by I wonder why they haven’t been cut!

Steve, I don’t think so. That is the Tennessee gas compressor/transmission plant. It’s a very quiet operation. I live next to the Triangle Park. I don’t hear anything that I would describe like that, however there is always the sound of gunfire at the Southborough Rod & Gun club on Fruit Street in Hopkinton that is heaviest on the weekends.

Hi Steve- I think that you are hearing gunfire from the Southborough Rod & Gun club, on Fruit Street in Hopkinton just south of Southville Rd. The noise really carries; I hear it near Finn.

My question or comment relates to the many defective, peeling maroon street signs in town. They were only installed a few years ago. Many seemed to fail pretty quickly, especially those in direct sunlight. It would seem like they would qualify for replacement under warranty. Was there any followup on that by anyone from the DPW with the manufacturer?

I, too, wonder about this. I think this has come up a few times but I don’t remember if there was ever a resolution…?

The sign for Metacomet is quite bad on one side.

Thank you John and Annette! Steve and I have been mystified about that noise, which we really didn’t notice until we adopted a dog recently. She gets upset when she hears the “booming” noises.

John and Annette – Thanks, that makes sense!

Steve, I think John and Annette are correct. I know the Southborough Rod and Gun Club has a Trap Shoot every Sunday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There is another tree on Oregon Rd., just before Garrison, that is leaning across the road with its branches draped across the wires. The roots are in a swampy area and have been lifting from the ground on one side since the October storm. Would you also have this checked out, Susan?

So, I just went to the Police dept to get the updated list of registered sex offenders in town.
I went because I had heard that a convicted level 2 sex offender who resides on the Southside (gotta be careful of what I write. God forbid I violate this piece of garbages privacy) was out on bail for his most recent charges of having Child porn on his computer.
I was shocked to find out that there are 3 registered offenders living in my neighborhood (right by Finn school) and another 9 working in town!! If you have not gone to the Police to get this info, you need to.
Get the word out to your friends and neighbors

John,
I believe we are in the same neighborhood! Earlier this year, I also obtained the sex offender information packet from the police station. I am troubled that two offenders live near Finn school. It makes me extra vigilant–the stakes are just too high.

To Karen Galliger,

There is a tree partially up rooted tree lying at a 60 degree angle across the road half way up Woodland Av. What concerns me is that there are no wires to prevent it from crashing into a car using the road. It is a real hazard and should be removed before someone is injured.
