The Algonquin spring postseason gets underway

As the school year draws to a close, student athletes at Algonquin are hoping for a memorable finish. A number of Algonquin teams, including baseball, boys volleyball, and both boys and girls lacrosse have made it into the postseason and will be playing in key games this week.

After a bye in the preliminary round, the fifth-seed Algonquin boys lacrosse team will face off against 12th-seed Shepherd Hill in the first round on Wednesday. The top-seed girls lacrosse team will take on either Nipmuc or Nashoba in the quarterfinals after a first-round bye. The game has not yet been scheduled. Last year both the boys and girls lacrosse teams made it all the way to the state finals.

The 10th-seed Algonquin boys volleyball team upset 7th-seed Douglas by a score of 3-2 last week in the division’s first round game. They’ll take on 2nd-seed Medfield in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.

The Algonquin baseball team also made the postseason, but the division bracket has not yet been posted. Last year the team made it to the state finals where they lost to Xaverian.

In other postseason news, the Central-West Division 1 outdoor track meet was held in Fitchburg yesterday. Algonquin senior Joe Breen took home first place in both the shot put and discus, while the girls came in third overall as a team. You can read more results from the meet here.

Good luck to all the teams playing this week. Here’s a summary of the upcoming games.
