It’s time for another open thread. What’s on your mind this week, Southborough?

For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
  • Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
  • Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
  • Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
  • Point out interesting or helpful resources

You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

My question is, why doesn’t Southborough have a Santa Mailbox at the Post Office like they do in Marlboro and Westborough in addition to many other towns. If we can get Santa to come on a helicopter, surely we can get a Santa Mailbox! What do we need to do to make it happen? Thank you!

Southboro Mom-
My recommendation is to take action; simply walk into our post office and ask. Many times, one person is capable of doing great things all it requires is rolling up your sleeves, asking questions and then making it happen. I suspect they will tell you why there is not a Santa box but if you do some diligence, find out the rationale (could be the cost of a box) and then create a plan to roll it out- I bet you will single handedly make it possible for a Santa Box to be in Southborough for 2014. Good Luck!

Whats going on with the Police Chief’s search It seems to me they are
in no no land with the process in the news today there was a letter about it and was quite good It seems to me that some of the selectmen don’t want a person who has 12 years service with the department
but want to go outside they did this once before and the townspeople are still paying for the mistake keep it local

Who is everyone’s favorite piano teacher for kids? Would love someone who comes to our home and has recitals.

Is there a hidden agenda concerning the Police Chief selection? Why are we needlessly spending dollars for outside “consultants” to help us find the right person, when the right person is already here in Sean James?

15 Summit Road (take Parkerville Road south of Route 9 and either Fairview Dr or Skylar Dr will take you to Summit Road–look for the pink balloons).

Did the Police Station change their number? I called the station twice today around 11:30 a.m. and one time it only rang busy and the second it rang like it was a fax machine. Luckily, it wasn’t anything too urgent. I have their number programmed into my phone and have had to call in the past so I know it’s correct.

Question about Book Donations at the Transfer Station…what REALLY happens to the books that go into the big metal container? We saw it being emptied…sorry to see how crumpled the books become when dumped inside…some were probably in good as new condition. The (worker) said the books are “recycled”…that “everybody reads off the internet now.” We love swapping books off the shelves and putting them to good use. Please, someone tell us the dispenser is not for literal recycling?!? My little girl was sad to see all the “broken” books.

The large book container outside of the swap shop and in front of the clothing trailer. It has a sign Donate Books or something similar. What happens to those books? Are they recycled like paper? Transfer station workers take books off the swap shop shelves and dump them into the large container.
