Obituary: Rev. Brendan W. O’Donoghue, 92 – Former St. Matthew’s pastor

Rev. Brendan W. O’Donoghue, 92, died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the St. Francis Nursing Center.

Father O’Donoghue was born in Worcester, son of William T. and Mary E. (Carrigan) O’Donoghue.

Father O’Donoghue graduated from St. Peter’s High School and St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH. He studied for the priesthood at the Seminary of Philosophy and later the Grand Seminary in Montreal, Canada. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1950 at the Cathedral of St. Paul by then Bishop John J. Wright.

He served many years as a priest in the Diocese of Worcester before retiring in 1997. St. Matthew’s Parish in Southborough was his last assignment as a Pastor. He had a strong interest in liturgical music and was choir director at several parishes during his ministry.

Father O’Donoghue leaves his sister Shirley Katherine O’Donoghue of Rochdale; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Eleanor Lamarche, and his brothers, Edward John O’Donoghue and Eugene Joseph O’Donoghue.

The funeral will be held Saturday, August 30, from the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, with the Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, August 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
