Community outreach and fundraising at Heritage Day: Matching “Scouting for Food” donations, games, contests, and membership drives

To me, outreach and fundraising by community organizations is the heart of Heritage Day.

Here are the non-profit exhibitors who shared with me reasons you should seek out their booths. I’ll start with the meaningful outreach, then on to the fun and yummy fundraisers.

Community Outreach

20121102-scouting-for-food-1Boy Scouts Troop 92
Kicking off the town-wide co-ed scout drive, “Scouting for Food”. Stop by with a nonperishable food item for the Southborough Food Pantry. Troop 92 will also make a matching donation of $10 for every 100 pounds of food collected at Heritage Day.

Friends of the Southborough Library
20151009_bean_bag_tossFree Beanbag toss game for prizes with lollipops for anyone who plays. Also sharing information and answering questions about the organization. (And pointing people to the Book and Bake Sale across the street.)

SOLF – Southborough Open Land Foundation
Informing people about their mission to preserve and protect Open Land in town for the benefit and enjoyment of all. They will:

  • Exhibit a town map showing our properties; hand out information; talk about trails and our periodic programs on nature.
  • Offer a sign-up for a walk at the Beals Preserve on October 18th.
  • Recruit members to help support our mission.

Southborough Democratic Committee
Stationed next to State Rep Dykema the committee will give out voter registration forms. They will also seek ideas for some future town-wide forums and recruit volunteers to support Democrats in elections.

Southborough Kindergroup
Members will be sharing information and answering questions about the cooperative playgroup for ages 0-5.

Fundraisers

Clash of the Cupcakes (Girl Scouts)
For $2, Participants can decorate their own cupcake at our booth, and then enter a competition to win “best cupcake” of their age division. The competition will be based on pictures of the cupcakes, so no one has to wait to devour their tasty masterpiece! Prizes will be by age groups: under 5, 6-10, 11-13 and 14+. Cupcakes and candy are nut-free and there is a gluten free option. The event is run by and for 7th grade Southborough Girl Scouts Troop 85160

Bake Sale and fun games

Boy Scouts Troop 92
Fun games for kids. Plus at noon is the annual Pie Eating Contest. (Contestants are split by age group and each given a small Table Top pie. Then the group chows down without any hands to see who can be first to lick a plate clean.)

Selling Hot Dogs, Popcorn, Cotton Candy, Soda, Cookies, Hot Chocolate, Coffee

Southborough Firefighters Association
Selling award winning chili made by one of our firefighters along with hot dogs.

Friends of the Southborough Library
Book and Bake Sale across route 85 in the parking lot and inside the library. (Click here for details.)

Trinity Church
Selling raffle tickets for a queen-sized quilt and hand-crafted earrings. The ‘Ocean Wave’ quilt is made of 100% cotton batik fabric. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6/$5 and proceeds support Trinity Church of Northborough.
