This week in sports

Most team sports are still in the midst of their seasons. But tournaments are already in progress for some Algonquin athletes.

Sectional Championships for Individual and Doubles Tennis played out this month. On Saturday, Algonquin’s Tyler Zhang was donned the Central Champion. The Telegram reports that Saturday’s unusually warm weather impacted the title match:

Hitting amid the heat and humidity at St. John’s, the top-seeded Zhang recovered from a slow start to beat Rangers freshman Aryan Nijhawan, 6-7 (5-7), 5-1 to win the championship. Zhang was awarded the title after Nijhawan suffered cramps in the second set, forcing him to retire.

Zhang becomes the first non-Westboro player to win the title since former St. John’s star Chris Ellis captured the championship in 2013. The Rangers’ Sumukh Pathi followed with four straight championships. This includes a win over Zhang in 2017. (read more)

Zhang is scheduled to play for the state title on June 16 at St. John’s High School.

In Boys Doubles, Gonk’s Will Koziel and Andy Zao won the Boys Central Quarter Finals the weekend prior. They were set to play Wachusett in the Semis on Saturday, but apparently defaulted.

In Girls Individual Tennis, Darby Kim advanced to the Semi-Finals at Top seed. She lost to the ultimate Central Champion, AMSA’s Kirsten Hailey.

In Track and Field, the ARHS Girls Team ranked 3rd at their sectionals, and the Boys 13th in theirs. Here are some of the standout performances:

  • 1st place – Girls 1 Mile Run – Tess Reyes
  • 1st place – Girls 4×100 Meter Relay – Olivia Giles, Day Ruffo, Christina Defeudis, and Erin O’Reilly
