[Highlights from last week’s competitions and what’s on tap this week in high school sports.]

With Covid numbers spiking, several area high school competitions were postponed over winter break. But others did take place, and the schedule is robust again this week. To mitigate the risk, Algonquin Athletics tweeted that their league (MidWach) voted to limit spectators at winter sports to parents and immediate household members of players.

As I write this, ARHS Girls Hockey are facing off against Longmeadow. The Gonk team’s been having a stellar season so far.

The Girls beat Pope Francis 2-1 on New Years Day. Days prior, they beat Natick 1-0 in the first round of the 2nd annual New Years Invitational. (The Championship game vs King Philip Regional is postponed, with no date scheduled yet.) That win came one week after they tied the same team 2-2. Their record now stands at 6-0-1. (The telegram covered the team’s success recently, here.)

Boys Basketball ended 2021 with its first loss of the season, 48-61 to Oakmont. Tonight, they’ll play Westborough.

In other competitions over the break, ARHS Boys Hockey lose the Metrowest Daily News Cup to Marlborough. (You can read about that here.) Marlborough’s the only team they’ve lost to, but it’s the second time this winter.

Gymnastics lost its second meet (to Marlborough 129.85 – 133.05). Wrestling and Indoor Track also competed at multi-school tournaments, but no results were posted. (Wrestling did win its first meet this winter before Christmas, 36-33 over Shephard Hill.)

Boys Swimming has won all three of its official meets this year (while the Girls have lost all three.)
