Events this week: Open Mic, Gallery Opening, Bubble Show, Native Gardens and more

Here are highlights of what’s happening around (or related to) our town this long weekend through next weekend.

Friday, June 17, 2022

  • Trottier 8th Grade Banquet (7:00 – 10:00 pm) @ Trottier Middle School: The celebration for students about to graduate Southborough’s K-8 schools. Refreshments, DJs, dancing, photos and fun. (Pre-registration and prepayment was required.)

Saturday, June 18, 2022

  • Read to a Dog (11:00 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s room: Children preferably ages 5 and up with some reading ability will read to Bear, a certified therapy dog. Please register in the Children’s Room for a time slo or email kivers@southboroughma.com.
  • Summer Seed Exchange (11:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Lawn: Ready to plant your seeds now that the weather is nicer outside? Stop by the Southborough Library outside to pick up a Gardening Kit and a tomato plant seedling (while supplies last). Each kit contains seed packets in one of three themes: (1) Grow Your Own Salad, (2) Gorge on Gourds or (3) Grow Your Own Herb Garden. Supplies will be limited, so be sure to stop by this special Saturday event!

  • Juneteenth holiday: Since the state holiday is on a Sunday, the official observance is on Monday. The public schools and Town facilities will be closed (including the Senior Center and Library)

  • Strength Training Class for seniors (8:30 am) @ zoom: Pre-registration required. For details on semi-weekly class, see newsletter.
  • Advanced Tai Chi for seniors (9:45 am) @ zoom: Pre-registration required. For details on semi-weekly class, see newsletter.
  • Summer Reading kickoff (10:00 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Today is the first day of the Library’s Summer Reading program for kids. From this point on, come sign up and participate in activities during regular Library hours.
  • Senior Songsters (11:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: Weekly rehearsal for the singing group open to all area seniors regardless of singing ability. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Knitting Club (1:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Knitters, welcoming new members. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Tuesday Tech Time (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: Need help with technology? Library staff and teen volunteers will make every effort to assist you. Bring questions about ebooks and electronic resources. This is a drop in event; no registrations necessary. Sessions are limited to no more than 1 hour.
  • AWC Open Mic Night (4:00 – 6:00 pm) @ Northborough Common: Algonquin Writing Center’s fundraiser for Sandy Hook Promise. Join them for an evening full of music, poetry and short stories by the AWC, poetry club and the music department. Bring your own picnic blankets. Refreshments will be provided. (ARHS students can sign up to perform here.)

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Southborough cemetery, 11 Cordaville Road: Free walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center, see newsletter. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Last day of NSBORO schools: Today is the last day of the school year for Northborough-Southborough Public Schools. As always, that means early dismissal.
  • Outdoor Story Time (4:00 – 4:30 pm) @ Southborough Library’s Lawn: Join us for story time outside on the Library Lawn! For all ages, no registration necessary. Please bring blankets/chairs.
  • Voices Carry Gallery Opening (6:00 – 9:00 pm) @ 21 Highland Street: Reception (with refreshments) for a special photo exhibition by All Things Sparkley Photography by Chelsea Bradway. “Together with Southborough Safe Spaces celebrate the beauty and strength of our LGBTQ+ community.   • Native Garden Tours (10:00 am and 11:00 am) @ Southborough Library and Beals Preserve: The Open Space Preservation Commission will lead tours through two of its native gardens. The gardens are planted with species identified as important to supporting at-risk native pollinators. The tour begins at the Library then moves over to Beals Preserve.   • Cook Book Club (1:00 – 2:00 pm) @ Southborough Library’s Lawn: You can select a dish from The Milk Street Cookbook and bring it to be enjoyed with others.
