Monarchs, Summer Nights, Adult Coloring, Foldscopes, and Back to School activities

Here are highlights of what’s happening around (or related to) our town this weekend through next weekend.

Saturday, August 27, 2022

  • Monarch Migratory Meander (5:00 pm – 7:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: A family-friendly hike will through the preserved native grassland habitat to learn about the pollinators’ cycles of migration and metamorphosis, and see Monarch caterpillars, chrysalis, and butterflies.   • Southborough Summer Nights (5:00 pm until after dusk) @ Neary campus, 53 Parkerville Road: The Town’s big annual end-of-summer, free festival. Music, kids activities, food vendors, and fireworks. For details, see dedicated post.

Monday, August 29, 2022

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center, see newsletter. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • ARHS Orientations (9:00 am) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Orientation activities for new students for grades 10-12 (1 hour) and incoming freshmen (2 hours).
  • ARHS Freshman Orientation (9:00 – 11:00 am) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Orientation activities for incoming freshmen.
  • Teen Summer Art Club (2:30 – 3:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, Teen Room: For Ages 12 to 18. (Last session this summer.) Work on a variety of creative projects like drawing, collage, coloring, or button making. For details, see related post.
  • ARHS Freshman Dance (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Annual dance to kick off the year for the freshman class.
  • ARHS Freshman Parent Meeting (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Informational meeting for parents/guardians of the incoming class.

Tuesday, August 30, 2022

  • Adult Coloring & Lunch (time) @ Southborough Senior Center: Join the group for a free social lunch with adult coloring books. For details, see related post.
  • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • NSBORO PreK-6 Open Houses (2:30 – 4:30pm): Finn, Neary, and Woodward open houses with varying schedules. For details, see related post.
  • Tuesday Tech Time (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: Need help with technology? Library staff and teen volunteers will make every effort to assist you. Bring questions about ebooks and electronic resources. This is a drop in event; no registrations necessary. Sessions are limited to no more than 1 hour.
  • Create a Foldscope (7:00 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, main floor: Free program for ages 12-18, though registration is required. Join the Southborough Rotary Club to create a Foldscope – a handmade paper microscope. For details, see related post.

  • First Day of NSBORO school: Public schools of Northborough and Southborough resume today.

  • Advanced Tai Chi (10:15 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library: Participants from the Southborough Senior Center’s class will be meeting at the library over the summer. Want to practice your poses? Or make new friends? Fellow experienced Tai Chi participants are welcome to come check it out. Drop-in, no registration.
  • Mah Jongg (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: The weekly program would love new players to join. Feel free to stop by to watch or talk to one of the players to see if you would be interested. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.

Friday, September 2, 2022

  • Canasta (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Dull Men’s Club (10:00 am) @ zoom: Casual social club for senior men. New members are always welcome to drop in. For details, see dedicated post.
  • ARHS Outdoor Movie Night (7:30 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School football field: ARHS’s Student Council is holding a fundraiser for student events, featuring the outdoor screening of Despicable Me. Organizers welcome the Northborough and Southborough communities to participate. For details, see dedicated post.
