Donate your extra candy to Rise Above

Neary is collecting for care packages to college students who have aged out of the foster care system.

Is your household suffering from candy overload? You can donate your excess candy to Neary School. Don’t worry – they aren’t planning to give the 4-5th graders a massive sugar rush.

Neary is holding its annual collection drive for a cause. This year, the focus is on an organization they added to the mix last year — Rise Above:

Since 2004, Neary School students have collected Halloween candy which was then sent to soldiers stationed all over the world, donated to local food pantries, and last year, we donated the majority of the collected candy to a local group, Rise Above. Rise Above is an organization dedicated to providing Massachusetts children in foster care with enriching activities, opportunities, and experiences. One of the things they do is send College Care Packages to Massachusetts students who are in college but have aged out of the foster care system. Many of us have great memories from our college days of getting a message that a care package was waiting in the mail room, and your child’s candy donation will certainly help with those late-night study sessions.

There will be collection boxes outside of Mrs. Turieo’s room (Room 2) for candy donations from Tuesday, November 1 through Friday, November 4. Children who want to participate can bring the candy to school and place it in the box themselves. For storage reasons, please send only prepackaged candy. If you would like to donate anything else for these care packages, here is a list of items they are looking for. Mrs. Turieo will be delivering donations on November 4, so please do not send in any candy after that date. The response from the students each year has been fantastic. Most children anticipate Halloween so eagerly. Although we do collect food items throughout the year, giving a small amount of their own candy makes the donation even more personal for the children. Thank you for your support.

If you know a Neary student, you can ask them to bring your donation in. If you don’t, you can drop by during school hours (through this Friday) and ring the front bell. (The school is at 53 Parkerville Road.) Someone from the front office will be happy to collect your contributions.
