The week in sports

Last week, several Titans teams put more wins up on the scoreboard. And a couple did very well in the first MIAA published power rankings of the season.

The highest ranked Titans are the co-op Girls Hockey team. They were slotted #4 out of 51 Division 2 teams. The ranking included last week’s 3-0 win over Franklin. But it didn’t account for their latest win. The Girls beat Wellesley 2-1 in Overtime yesterday.

Boys Hockey was ranked #7 of 43 in D2. The calculations did include their 2-2 tie with Hopedale last week but not yesterday’s 2-0 win over Concord-Carlisle.

In Basketball, both Gonk teams have a 4-4 record as of last Tuesday when each beat Fitchburg. (The Girls dominated 55-18 at home, while the Boys battled it out in Fitchburg through 3 overtimes to win 81-79.)

The Gonk Girls are currently  #30 out of 64 in the D1 rankings and the Boys #43 out of 65.

Reminder, tonight’s Boys game includes a halftime ceremony to celebrate the school’s Special Olympics banner.

In Swimming, the Girls continued to lose (138-34 to Bromfield and 69-25 to Wachusett) But the Boys beat Bromfield 100-70 and Wachusett 69-25. They are undefeated in their league, and have an 8-1 record overall.

In Skiing, the Algonquin Girls team came in 1st place in last week’s Slalom race at Ski Ward with Alexa Butterfield and Jula Utzschneider in 3rd and 4th place. The Boys team placed 4th with Michael Desio in 2nd place.

On Friday, Girls and Boys Indoor Track competed in the first day of the Northeast Invitational. According to a tweet from coach Patrick Galvin, they racked up “Lots of personal bests and automatic state qualifiers!” You can see details here

ARHS Gymnastics on January 13th by Owen Jones PhotographyThe second day of the Invitational was among several Gonk competitions scheduled for last week that didn’t appear to have results posted anywhere. (The others were Indoor Track meets at Shrewsbury, Wrestling at North Middlesex, a Wrestling Tri-Meet at home, and a Gymnastics home meet vs. Groton-Dunstable. Photos by Owen Jones Photography document that Gonk Gymnasts did perform.)
