The week in sports

Basketball and Ice Hockey enter state tourney

This week kicks of MIAA state tournaments for Basketball and Ice Hockey. To my surprise the brackets include a team tonight that I wrote off last week.

Last Monday, I pointed out that ARHS Boys Basketball hadn’t qualified and no games were left on their regular season schedule. It turns out, there was one last shot — and they made it.

After my story ran, a CMass tourney “Consolation Game” was posted. On Tuesday, Gonk beat Shrewsbury 54-47, bringing their record up to 10-10 and qualifying them for the MIAA Division 1 tourney (at #46).

Tonight, they’ll head to #19 Methuen for the Preliminary Round at 6:30 pm.

At that same time, the Girls (#29) will play the Preliminary Round on their home court against Lynn (#36). If they prevail, they’ll have to go up against 4th seed Wachusett (who they lost to last month 47-30 at home). Tickets to the game are $3 per student/senior and $5 for adults.

On Wednesday, Titans Ice Hockey teams will head straight into the Round of 32, both as the favored upper seeds.

The #5 Girls will play #28 Natick, who they already beat twice this winter. That game is 6:00 pm at the New England Sports Center.

At 7:30 pm, the Gonk Boys (#7) will play #26 Newton South at North Star Arena.

That morning, four members of the ARHS Ski team will compete at the State Alpine Ski Tournament at Berkshire East Mountain Resort.

In Indoor Track, three Titans are scheduled to compete in the State Boys Pentathalon at the Reggie Lewis Center this Wednesday. One of them, Miles Lipka, competed at the All-State Championships over vacation where he came in #11 in the prelims for the Boys 55 Meter Hurdles.

Two members of the Girls team also competed at the All-States. Ellyana Hansen came in #20 in the Girls High Jump and Brigid Purcell #23 in the Girls 2 Mile Run.

The Cheer Team had a pretty good February break. They came in 2nd place at the Shepherd Hill Invitational then 3rd place at the MidWach League competition. This Sunday, they’ll compete in the Central/West Regional Championships, 10:00 am at Shepherd Hill. (Click here for tickets.)

Updated (2/27/23 3:08 pm): I forgot to include an update on last week’s regional tourneys. Boys Hockey beat North Middlesex 3-0 in their first match of the CMass tourney on Wednesday. In Friday’s Final, they lost to Westborough 3-0. You can read Community Advocate’s coverage of the game here.

On Tuesday, Girls Basketball lost 41-39 to Wayland in the Westborough Invitational tourney.
