If you want to encourage your 5th – 8th grade daughter(s) to explore a future in science, technology, engineering or math, take note.
The Northboro Junior Woman’s Club is putting on its annual STEM conference for girls. As in years past, they are inviting Southborough students to join them for the free event. This year, the gathering will be back in person.
The event is Saturday, April 1st, but registration is due March 24th. (I suggest signing up sooner for kids to get some of their top choices for the workshops.)
This year’s conference will be held at Algonquin Regional High School from 8:15 am – 2:00 pm.
After an opening presentation, the girls will be able to attend four interactive career workshops:
Presenters will explain what they do in their occupation and what sparked their interest in the field, their education, the rewards and challenges of their profession and provide hands-on exploration/activities.
This year, there are 22 workshops to choose from:
- Architect — Dream It, Design It, Build It — All about Architecture
- Astronomy Education — Recreate an Interactive Planetarium
- Biology/Biotechnology Teacher — DNA, Micropipeting, and Agarose Gel Electrophoresis for Crime Scene Analysis
- Biomedical Engineering — Muscle Force and Electromyography (EMG)
- Chemistry/Biology — Drug Discovery
- Chiropractor/Neurology — The Power of Your Nervous System
- Clothing and Textiles — Science,Math and Fashion Design
- Engineering & Innovation — Invent a New Product
- Environmental Engineering — Help solve the problem of What to do with all the Waste?
- Environmental Science — Water Quality and/or Composting worms
- Forensic Science — CSI -How Scientists Play a Role in Criminal Investigations
- Geotechnical Engineer — Soil Liquefaction under Seismic Loads
- Horticulture — Integrated Pest Management/beneficial insects
- Hydrology and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) — Flooding/Water Movement/Water Principals
- Nurse Practitioner — Take a Deep Breath
- Nursing — ABC’s of Nursing
