The week in sports

Several Algonquin varsity teams have either been competing in post-season competitions, or are getting ready to.

At the Division 2 State Championships for Indoor Track, the ARHS Boys team came in 3rd place. Stephen White won both the Boys 1 Mile and 2 Mile runs. The team also won the 4×800 Meter Relay. For the Girls, Olivia LaBelle won the 55 Meter Hurdles and the team won the 4×200 Meter Relay. As a team, the Girls finished #6.

Several members of both teams qualified to compete in this Saturday’s MIAA Meet of Champions.

Since I last covered Algonquin sports, Wrestling competed in two big tournaments. At the Western Mass sectionals for Division 2, five wrestlers qualified for the D2 Championships. Finishing in 3rd place for their weight classes were Eli Konarski and Adam Ayzenshtat. In 4th place were Ibrahim Rowe, Eshaan Shah, and Alexander Franca.

Of the four that were able to take part in the championship, only one is moving on to All States later this week — Franca who finished in 4th place.

At the Swimming Division 1 Championships, ARHS Girls came in 23rd place out of 34 schools and the Boys 39th out of 42.

Girls Basketball won three games in a row, the last of which was the first round of a tournament. The Girls beat Concord-Carlisle 72-62, Waltham 54-45, and Tewksbury 49-34. The Girls will play in Westborough’s annual invitational semi-finals tonight. If they prevail, they will play in the championship tomorrow night at 6:00 pm.

Their record is 9-10. The latest MIAA Power Rankings have them at #33. They either need to move up just one slot or improve to a .50 record to make the Division 1 playoffs.

Boys Basketball went in the other direction. Their record is now 5-14 after three more losses. The Boys lost to St. John’s 61-38, Marlborough 49-47, and South  61-41.

Basketball’s Cheer squad will be putting in extra time this week. They’re set to compete at the MidWach League Championships at Shephard Hill.

Girls Ice Hockey beat Shrewsbury 4-1 and Dedham 5-2 last week. Boys Ice Hockey lost to Auburn 5-3 but beat Natick 3-2.

Three Gymnastics team members qualified to compete in the upcoming sectionals for Southern MA hosted by Algonquin — Kiera Akus, Maya Regan and Maddie Ho. Despite consistent wins this season, the team enters Saturday’s tourney at only 10th seed out of 12 schools.

Now, here are the ARHS varsity competitions on tap for the week:

Reminder, tickets for any games which require them (Basketball, Hockey, etc.) are sold here.

Updated (2/21/24 10:05 am): I corrected the date reference for the Indoor Track Meet of Champions on Saturday and added it to the competition schedule.

Updated (2/21/24 3:50 pm): I learned that Boys Basketball’s game against South was a non-playoff game for the Central Mass Athletic Director Association’s tournament. (And tonight’s game is another one.)

Interestingly, Algonquin Boys Ice Hockey wasn’t included in the seeding for the CMADA tourneys for that sport this year. Normally, they are in Class A. (There isn’t a CMADA tourney for Girls Hockey and ARHS Girls Basketball hasn’t been part of the CMADA tourney)
