The week in sports

MIAA Basketball and Hockey playoffs begin

MIAA state playoffs for Hockey and Basketball kickoff this week, and three Algonquin teams are in the mix.

Girls Ice Hockey won its 6th straight game last week, 6-2 over Pembroke. They enter the MIAA Division 2 playoffs as 5th seed. They’ll play 28th seed Auburn in the Round of 32 on Thursday at New England Sports Center in Marlborough.

Earlier in the evening, ARHS Boys Hockey will play at North Star Ice in Westborough. The Boys beat Natick on Saturday (3-2) and enter the D2 tourney as 14th seed, and bypass the Prelims. They’ll play 19th seed Whitman-Hanson in the Round of 32.

Girls Basketball beat Wayland in the semi-finals for Westborough’s Invitational on Tuesday, but ended its winning streak by losing the Championship to Medway on Wednesday. Still, they secured their place in the MIAA Division 1 playoffs.

That was no certain thing in recent weeks. To qualify, they needed to have as many wins than losses or move up one spot in the Power Rankings. They only improved their record to 10-11, but did move up to the last automatic place in the Power Rankings — #32.

The team will compete in the Preliminary Round tomorrow against lower seed Methuen. If they win, they’ll have to face top seed Bishop Feehan in the Round of 32.

Boys Basketball finished out its season on Wednesday with another loss (85-76 to Doherty). They didn’t make the D1 playoffs bracket.

ARHS Gymnastics competed in the South Sectionals where the team came in 12th place. You can find individual gymnast results here.

Gonk Cheer competed at the Mid-Wach League Championship, where they came in 3rd place. But that didn’t qualify them to move on to Regionals. And ARHS Wrestling‘s Alexander Franca competed in the All States but won’t be moving on to New England.

Tomorrow, three members of the Alpine Ski teams will compete in their state championship tournament: Grady Martinek for the Boys, and Emmy Beauschesne and Lia Borden for the Girls.

Indoor Track Competed at the MIAA’s Meet of Champions on Saturday. Standout performances included 2nd place finishes for Stephen White in the Boys 1 Mile, the Boys 4×800 Relay team, and the Girls 4×200 Relay team,

Three members of the Girls team and one member of the Boys will return to the Reggie Lewis Track Center on Wednesday to compete in the MSTCA Pentathlon

Now, here is ARHS varsity schedule so far this week:
