Town Election Update: Three official races (Updated)

The May ballot will include a race for the Select Board and two races for the Regional School Committee

Yesterday was the deadline for filing papers to run in the May 14th Town election. The Town Clerk has verified that Southborough voters will be able to choose candidates in three races on the ballot, although only two are for Southborough seats.

After three potential candidates didn’t follow through on papers they initially pulled, there won’t be races that appeared to have been brewing for the Southborough School Committee, Housing Authority, and Board of Assessors.

There will still be a race for the Select Board — between the current chair, Andrew Dennington, and Joseph Palmer, a member of the Capital Planning & Improvement Committee.

There will also be two races for seats on the Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee. Three candidates from each town have filed papers for two seats. Each town gets to vote on who represents the other town on the committee for Algonquin Regional High School:

Southborough candidates – vote for two – 3 year term:

  • Kathleen Harragan Polutchko (incumbent)
  • Joanna Sheyner
  • Jennifer Primack

Northborough candidates – vote for two – 3 year term:

  • Kathleen Howland (incumbent)
  • Gigi Lisa Howell
  • Christopher Allen Lacasse

The Southborough Library is still working to finalize details for the annual forum for voters, Candidates Night.

Pencil in the tentative date of Thursday, April 25th at the Senior Center/Cordaville Hall, 9 Cordaville Road.

As in past years, the event will begin with a 6:30 pm Meet & Greet to which all candidates are invited. Then at 7:00 pm, Library Trustee Janet Maney will moderate Q&A panels for the contested Southborough seats.*

Between papers not filed and new candidates, the official candidates list has changed significantly since my update two weeks ago. Here are the names that will be on the ballot for uncontested seats:

  • Assabet Valley Regional Vocational District School Committee – 4 year term – Mark Pietrewicz (incumbent)
  • Board of Assessors – 3 year term – Heath Widdis (incumbent)
  • Board of Commissioners of Trust Funds – 3 year term – Susan Delarda-Wood (incumbent)
  • Board of Health – 3 year term – Chelsea Malinowsk (incumbent)
  • Board of Trustees Southborough Library – vote for two – 3 year term
    • David Ekberg (incumbent)
    • Mary Tinti
  • Moderator – 1 year term – Paul Cimino
  • Housing Authority – 3 year term – Bertha (Bea) Ginga
  • Planning Board – 5 year term – Marnie Hoolahan (incumbent)
  • Southborough School Committeevote for two — 3 year term
    • Laura M. Kaufman
    • Alan Michael Zulick

*This year, the moderated Candidates Night panel won’t include the Northborough seats.

Updated (4/8/24 3:25 pm): Joanna Sheyner is no longer running for the Regional School Committee seat this year. Therefore, that is no longer a race.
