March Madness Glory for Southborough Native

Anyone who has been watching or closely following the men’s March Madness already knows that for the second straight year, Southborough native Alex Karaban helped UConn win the championship.

There’s been plenty of press coverage of Karaban lately. I’m highlighting a few that stood out to me.

Yesterday, CBS Boston posted a story dedicated to covering Karaban’s key role in the team’s triumph. According to Sports Writer Matt Geagan, among the many talents on the team the former Algonquin player “was the glue guy that helped hold it all together”:

UConn Huskies forward Alex Karaban didn’t put up big numbers in Monday night’s NCAA championship game against Purdue. But the sophomore from Southboro did what he does best as the Huskies won their second straight title: A whole lot of everything.

You can read that here.

You can also listen to the player himself celebrate and reflect on the win in an interview on Fox Sports Radio following the championship game here.

Readers who knew the family before Karaban became famous may be especially interested in WBUR’s story from two weeks ago. WBUR interviewed his mother Olga leading up to the Sweet 16 game at TD Garden:

it won’t be Karaban’s first time playing at the storied Boston arena. As a freshman at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough his team competed in a tournament there. Karaban has been shooting hoops since he was about 8 years old, his mom said; he started playing on town teams in Southborough, then with travel teams.

“You just drive your kids to practices and games, and never expected him to win a championship,” Olga Karaban said. “When he was a little bit older we could see that he had potential. And he loves it. All his hard work, you know, paid off.”
