The week in sports

Girls Swim wins MidWach Championship, Boys finish 2nd

Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.

ARHS Boys & Girls Swim teams competed at the Mid-Wach Championships on Friday. According T&G, the Girls are still undefeated. They took home the title of League Champs by earning 314 points — a 60 point margin over 2nd place Grafton.

The previously undefeated Boys team also had impressive results, but finally met their match. The Titans came in 2nd place with 375 points, just 20 points behind Grafton and 127 points ahead of 3rd place AMSA.

For individual accomplishment highlights, Girls’ Mina Chung won the 200 medley and 100 breaststroke, and Elizabeth Walsh finished second in the 100 backstroke. The Boys’ Jonathan Ribeiro won the 200 freestyle and placed 2nd in the 100 backstroke, Simon Linden finished first in the 50 freestyle and 2nd in the 100 freestyle, Maxwell Qi won the 100 breaststroke, and Maxim Achkinazi placed 2nd in the 500 freestyle.

You can find additional details, including the teams’ impressive relay results, in the Telegram’s story here, along with more photo highlights here. This weekend, the teams will compete in the West/Central Sectionals.

ARHS Girls Hockey remains the only undefeated team in their Ice Hockey division. Saturday was their 14th win, 4-0 over Leominster. Yet the co-op team slipped to #3 in the latest Division 1 Power Rankings issued on Friday, behind Notre Dame Academy and St. Mary’s.

Boys Hockey moved up in the Division 2 rankings to #22 from #25 after tying 3-3 with Nashoba on Wednesday. But that was followed by a 6-0 loss to Shrewsbury on Saturday. Their record is currently 5-7-2.

Boys Basketball improved its record to 9-4 by beating Leominster 63-53 last Friday at home. In the rankings released earlier that day, the team had already inched up from #35 to #32 for D1. Below are photo highlights posted by photographer Jeff Slovin:

Girls Basketball moved in the opposite direction. The Girls lost two more games last week, lowering their record to 7-7. Between their 51-24 loss to Acton-Boxborough on Thursday and 53-47 loss to Leominster on Friday, the team dropped one slot to #21 for D1.

ARHS Ski Teams competed in a Giant Slalom race last Thursday. Sophomore Tommy Barna (of Southborough) won the Boys competition. Also in the top 20 — for the Boys, Reilly Silvia (#9) and Dylan Steele (#14), and for the Girls, Jane Campbell (#10) and Cara Leonard (#17).

The Boys and Girls teams each finished 4th place. (That was likely a disappointment after consistently placing 3rd in prior weeks.)

ARHS Ski Senior night (contributed photo)Thursday was also the team’s Senior Night, honoring Captain Reilly Silvia, Captain Dylan Steele, Captain Cara Leonard, Silvestre Morgado, and Ibrahim Rowe. (See contributed photo right.)

This week will be the team’s final regular meet at Ski Ward, and the last chance for skiers to qualify for State Championships later this month.1

Girls Gymnastics lost 130.9-143.3 to Westborough on Thursday. According to ARHS Athletics’ Instagram update, they are currently #26 in D1. This week, they’ll be competing in the MidWach League Championships against Marlborough, North Middlesex, Shrewsbury, and Westborough.

Last Monday, I noted that results hadn’t been posted from that Sunday’s multi-school Boys Wrestling meet between Algonquin, Boston Latin, Duxbury, Hopkinton and Milford. Those results are now out, showing that ARHS wrestlers only won 1/5 of their bouts. More recently, the team won about 1/3 of the matches when they hosted Leominster on Wednesday. (You can find results for individual wrestlers here.)

Boys & Girls Indoor Track teams competed at the 5th regular MidWach League Meet on Wednesday. (You can check out their results here and Slovin’s photo highlights below.)

(The teams were also scheduled to compete at a MidWach League Meet in Boston yesterday. But no info or results have been posted.) The MidWach Division Championships appear to be scheduled for this Saturday in Fitchburg. But that’s also the day of the last chance MSTCA Qualifier meet in Boston.

Here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week2:
