I’m posting a reminder and some new details on this summer’s “Boroughs night” at the Worcester Red Sox a week from tomorrow.

The WooSox invites Southborough residents to dominate the stands at their friendly “Town Takeover” themed event. To help motivate our community, $5 from each “Southborough” designated ticket sold will be donated to the Town Scholarship Fund.

Plus, I learned that a well known member of the community will be throwing a pitch as Southborough’s selected “Hometown Hero”.

Town Takeover WooSox flyerFour years ago, the WooSox began pitting neighboring towns against each other in a friendly competition to see who could drum up the biggest turnout. The marketing has shifted to focus more on civic pride than hometown rivalries to gin up excitement.

The Woo Sox promote:

Join us at Polar Park on Wednesday July 22nd at 6:45pm to gather with your fellow Southborough residents, show your civic pride, and enjoy an exciting night of WooSox baseball! . . .

This is sure to be the talk of the town, so don’t miss out! Come rep your town, support a great local cause, and be part of something bigger than the game!

The team hosts numerous Town Takeover events through the season. At the end of the season, the town with the largest turnout for the season (through their takeover event) will be rewarded with a trophy and special recognition.

On Wednesday, July 22nd at 6:45 pm, the WooSox’ Town Takeover are dedicated to the Boroughs of Southborough, Northborough, Marlborough, and Westborough (plus Hardwick & New Braintree). (The other Towns all have their own selected charities.)

Click here to buy tickets that support Southborough. (Don’t purchase through their generic game schedule, or it won’t credit Southborough with the ticket sales.) with prices ranging from $26.86 – $30.97 each. (Note, this year, there is no promise of a credit towards concession sales.)

The WooSox also encourage anyone with a group of 15 or more to reach out about how to get “more involved in the action!” and for local businesses to use it as a sponsorship opportunity. (Learn more here.)

Commander Whynot response to being honored on Memorial Day 2026 (photo by Beth Melo)At the July 7th Select Board meeting, Town Administrator Mark Purple reported that the Town had put forth VFW Commander Steve Whynot as Southborough’s “Community Hero” to throw a pitch at the game. He reminded that at Memorial Day, Whynot was recently recognized for his long service to Southborough veterans.

He indicated that Whynot had been notified in time to work on his pitching skills. But, it sounded like the veteran had a good foundation, since he used to do a lot of softball pitching.

During the update, the board discussed that Select Board members Kathy Cook and Andrew Dennington had been selected to throw pitches in prior years.

The July 22nd home game at Polar Park will pit the Worcester Red Sox against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. For more details on the event, click here. (And for parking info, click here.)
