Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.
Both ARHS Boys and Girls Outdoor Track teams came in 2nd place at the District E CMass District Championships last Saturday.
For the Boys, highlights included 1st place wins for the Boys 4×100 relay and Miles Lipka’s Javelin throw, and 2nd place finishes for the 4×800 relay, Max Eigen’s 100 Meters run, Brandon Charles’ High Jump, and Benoit Skilton’s Long Jump. For the Girls, Arianna Gentile won the 100 Meters and finished 2nd for the 200 Meters. Jillian Belniak won the 100 meter hurdles and came in 2nd for the 400 meter hurdles, which Tanvi Mehta won. You can check out their full results here. This weekend, they’ll compete in their League Championships.
In other sports, this is the last regular week of the spring season. (Although, that could get stretched to next week for any games postponed due to weather.)
At this point, six Titans teams have firmly secured places in the upcoming MIAA state tourneys. But at least three teams are on shaky ground at best.
Starting off with the teams that will definitely make their brackets. . .
Boys Lacrosse got back on track last week with two wins over North Middlesex (12-4) and Westborough (11-6). Their record is now 13-3. The team is ranked #12 For Division 2. (Check out Jeff Slovin’s Instagram post below from the Senior night winning game against Westborough.)

Girls Lacrosse added another win (over Medway, 10-8) and loss (to Westborough, 12-10). They’re ranked #22 for D2 with a 6-10 record.
In Tennis, the Girls beat Sutton (4-1) and Hopkinton (4-1) last week. They are now #17 for D1. The Boys beat Marlborough (4-1) and Sutton (5-0) but lost to Hopkinton (1-4). They are now #19 for D2.
Gonk Baseball beat Marlborough (3-2) and Westford (10-0) last week. But that was bookended by losses to Shrewsbury (13-0) and St. John’s (7-0). The team’s record is now 12-5 and they’re ranked #7 for D2. (Below are Slovin’s highlights from the Senior Night game against Marlborough.)

Although Boys Rugby is only ranked #5 of 11 teams, they have a 5-1 record. That includes last week’s 35-14 win over Braintree.
As for those that don’t have secure spots in tourneys. . .
Boys Volleyball has good odds of making the D1 brackets. Last week, the team beat North Middlesex (3-1) but lost to Millis (0-3) and Acton-Boxborough (0-3), updating their record is 8-8. Although only ranked #38, they can make the cut if they win at least one of their final two games.
Like Boys Rugby, Girls Rugby is ranked #5, but out of fewer teams. And their record is just 2-4 following last week’s 33-35 loss to Lincoln-Sudbury. They don’t have enough games left on the schedule to improve their record to 0.5. So, they would need to move up a notch to #4 out of the 7 D1 teams. That seems unlikely, especially since their only remaining game is against Montachusett Voc Tech, a new team that isn’t in an MIAA division.
Softball‘s ability to make playoffs is also a reach. To qualify for the D1 playoffs, it looks like the 49th place team would need to win all four remaining games. That’s a hefty challenge for a team that hasn’t won two straight games this season. The team’s current record is 5-9 after losing to Fitchburg (12-6) and Nashoba (15-4) last week before beating Groton-Dunstable (6-3).
The only other team, is the co-op Girls Golf team out of Westborough. They lost to Nashoba (26-28) but beat Notre Dame (20-34) last week, updating their record to 1-7-1. They have at least three games left this season before the Sectionals takes place.
Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week:
