Frankenstein on stage tonight thru Saturday

St. Mark's Theater Dept is putting on the gothic drama this week.

Earlier today, I promoted ARHS’ play coming up next week. As soon as I posted the story, I learned that the private high school located in Southborough is opening its fall play tonight.

Unlike ARHS’ whimsical musical, St. Mark’s School students are taking on a dark drama. The school’s Theater Department is inviting the public to attend its production of “Frankenstein”.

Students will perform the play tonight through Saturday night, November 12th – 15th. The play by Nick Dear is based on Mary Shelley’s classic gothic novel. (This should not to be confused with the series of monster movies inspired by the tale.)

The school promotes:

Childlike in spirit yet grotesque in form, Victor Frankenstein’s creature is thrust into a hostile world by his horrified maker. Met with cruelty at every turn, he becomes desperate and vengeful—setting out to confront his creator and demand a terrible bargain. Nick Dear’s adaptation explores scientific responsibility, human development, love, and the nature of good and evil in a thrilling, haunting retelling of Mary Shelley’s classic.

The announcement markets the play as appropriate for middle schoolers and older. It comes with a “Content Advisory”:

This production includes moments of strong violence, prop firearms, and strobe lighting effects.

Shelly’s book recently got an updated Hollywood treatment, with a movie released in select theaters and Netflix this fall. The Southborough prep school’s production is a bit smaller. It will take place in their Black Box Theater.

Due to the small venue, the attendance is capped at 110 per night. Those who submit the registration form here in advance will get preference for admittance.

Attendees must arrive in time to be seated by 7:00 pm. “No Late admission” will be allowed.
