The week in ARHS sports

[The weekly highlights from last week’s competitions and what’s on tap this week in Algonquin Regional High School varsity sports.]

It’s still early in the spring season. But I couldn’t help notice a clear trend in Algonquin sports. So far, most of ARHS Girls varsity teams have been at least slightly outperforming the Boys team counterparts. (And, sometimes, significantly.)

For instance — In Tennis, the Boys beat Wachusett 5-0 on Monday but lost to Westborough 0-5 on Thursday. Their record is 2-4.

The Girls started last week with the same pattern — a 3-2 win over Wachusett and 2-3 loss to Westborough. But they added one more home game on Friday — a 4-1 win over AMSA. That improved their record to 4-2.

Photographer Jeff Slovin posted photo highlights from the Girls’ Friday match:

In Girls Softball, the Titans beat North Middlesex 5-1 and Westborough  5-4, but they lost 2-8 to Oakmont in between. They now stand at 4-4.

Yesterday, Boys Baseball played a Patriot’s Day game with light snowflakes flying around. According to a post by Slovin, who captured the unusual moment, the game took place on a special anniversary for the famous alum of the Gonk Baseball team that the field they played on was named after:

Unfortunately, those fun facts are a bit overshadowed by the Titans’ performance this season. The game was the team’s 7th loss out of 7 games. Yesterday, they lost to St. John’s 1-7. Last week they lost to Shepherd Hill 2-3 and Westborough 0-5.

Boys Lacrosse is also 0-7 as of this afternoon. Last week, they lost 10-11 to Grafton and 10-18 to Wachusett. This afternoon, they lost 10-13 to Pope Francis Pep.

Girls Lacrosse has had uneven, but better, results. Last week, they lost 4-16 to Grafton, but followed with a 17-8 win over Wachusett. This afternoon, they beat Agawam 15-7, improving their record to 4-5.

in last week’s Outdoor Track & Field home meet, the Titans Girls beat Shepherd Hill 106 to 39. The Boys lost the meet 60 to 81. Of course, for this sport, individual achievements are more important than on most teams. Below are photo highlights of the Titans athletes in action:

This Friday, members from both teams are scheduled to compete at the MSTCA’s  “Invacational & Pentathlon”. (Note: The name of the annual competition is the association’s play on words, not a typo.)

ARHS Rugby is the exception to the trend. The Girls are 0-3 after their most recent 0-40 shutout to Weymouth last week. The Boys did lose to Milton last week, but only 21-23. And their record is a perfectly mixed 1-1-1.

Two of the school’s varsity teams don’t have a gendered counterpart this season. Unfortunately, neither of those are performing that well either.

Boys Volleyball‘s record is currently 2-6. The Titans beat Nashoba 3-0 last Monday, but followed with two more losses, 2-3 to Wachusett and 0-3 to Doherty.

Girls Golf’s* posted record is 2-4 after at least two more losses last week to Auburn and Notre Dame Academy last week. But no results were posted for their game against Quabbin. This week, the team is taking a break.

Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for the remainder of this week1:
