Longtime Northborough-Southborough superintendent Robert Melican passed away Wednesday after a long illness. He was 62. Melican began his education career as a teacher in Northborough in 1969. He advanced to superintendent in 1996. In 2004 he was named the state’s Superintendent of the Year. He retired in 2005 after 36 years of service. Two Route 9 businesses — Town Line Rentals and Shrubs & Trees — were broken into on Friday night. The thief made off with about $50 from Town Line Rentals. The owner of Shrubs & Trees wouldn’t say if anything was taken. The businesses are both located on Route 9 east. The incidents are still under investigation. The Northboro Road bridge is now officially closed to traffic. I drove by today and barriers were up on both sides of the bridge and the site was crowded with crews working on replacing the structure which was deemed unsafe by MassHighway.
