Selectmen increase sticker fee, but leave Transfer Station hours as they are

There were a number of potential changes on the table last night as selectmen discussed Transfer Station operations – reduced hours, an increased sticker fee, new fees for disposal of bulky items, and a wintertime closure for the Swap Shop. In the end, selectmen voted to increase the cost of a Transfer Station sticker, but rejected most of the other changes.

The last time the Board of Selectmen dealt with the Swap Shop it was huge news. The board ultimately backed off its plan at the time to shutter the leave-and-take area at the Transfer Station after unprecedented public outcry. This week they’ll take another look at the Swap Shop and consider not whether to close it altogether, but whether operations should be scaled back.

Would you support substantially raising the cost of a Transfer Station sticker? Or reducing the hours of operation? How about an extra fee for disposal of bulky items like refrigerators? Or doing away with the provision that allows seniors to use the Transfer Station for free? What about a use-based model that would charge you by the bag or by the visit?

Voluntary odd/even water ban now in effect

The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously last night to impose a voluntary odd/even water restriction starting immediately and running through September 22. Under the ban, outside water use is restricted based on your house number, so odd-numbered houses use water on odd-numbered days, and even-numbered houses use water on even-numbered days.
