Speed was a factor in fatal crash on Southville Road

Police have concluded that speed was a factor in the accident that claimed the life of a Framingham High student on Monday night, and that comes as no surprise to those who live along Southville Road.

“It’s a terrible tragedy, but it solidifies our long time issue with the speeding traffic along Southville Road,” said Southville Road resident Linda Shaffer in an email to her neighbors.

Shaffer, whose dog was struck and killed by a car on Southville Road last year and who lives close to Monday night’s accident scene, established the Southville Road Neighborhood Network in 2006.

The neighborhood group met with police that year to discuss the traffic problem. The late Chief William Webber recommended collecting license plate numbers of those speeding on the road and contacting businesses whose vehicles violate the 35 mph limit.

Shaffer says she has had some success collecting license plate numbers, and the police have had some success with speed traps on the road, but it has been limited. “Traffic compliance efforts will need to be collaborative ones from Ashland, Southborough and Westborough not only to ensure the safety of us living on Southville Road but those who travel it as well.”

Shaffer plans to redouble her efforts with Southborough police in light of this week’s tragic accident.
