You might remember firefighter and children’s author Dayna Hilton was in Southborough earlier this month promoting her latest fire safety book Sparkles Goes to Boston. While her two fire safety dogs Tango and Siren made the trip from Arkansas with her, 12-year-old Sparkles did not due to her age.

Now back in Arkansas, Hilton announced yesterday that Sparkles passed away during the night.

It is with great sadness to share with you that my best friend, Sparkles, passed away last night.

Even though she is gone, her message of helping keep people safe from fire will live on.

Please pray for her, her family, her fire service family, and for all of the many people, especially children, of whose lives she has touched.

There has been an outpouring of support from fans on Facebook since the announcement. Hilton and Sparkles have been credited with saving several lives through the lessons taught in Hilton’s book and through their work with children.

Hilton says memorial donations may be made to the Keep Kids Fire Safe Foundation.
