MWDN: Southborough eliminates town engineer position

Southborough Town Engineer John Woodsmall recently accepted a position as the public works director in Holden (congrats, John!). His last day on the job was Wednesday. The Board of Selectmen this week decided to replace Woodsmall not with another town engineer, but with a staff engineer. It’s a move that is expected to save the town about $20K per year.

Reports the Metrowest Daily News:

(DPW Superintendent Karen Galligan) told selectmen on Tuesday that the town can get by with a staff engineer, who would have most of the qualifications of a town engineer except for the professional engineer license.

“I believe we can do that same work for $20,000 less,” she told selectmen, adding that items requiring stamps will need to be outsourced, but most of his responsibilities do not require a professional engineer’s license.

The Conservation Commission, for one, probably won’t be thrilled with the selectmen’s decision. In a letter sent earlier this month they argued for keeping the town engineer position.
