Obituary: Florence May Femia, 99, Southborough High grad

Florence May (Cooper) Femia, 99, passed away Friday evening, Dec. 14, 2012 surrounded by loved ones. She was born Jan. 1, 1913 in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota. The area and the Native American community were always close to her heart. When young, she moved with her mother Caroline (Jacobson) Cooper to Southborough, MA where she graduated from Southborough High School. She married Elwin Robbins and had a devoted daughter, Joyce M. McClelland of Millville, MA. Retiring in 1955, she spent 20 years as a loan officer for the Framingham Trust. Before marrying her second husband Domenic Femia, she was a loving stepmother to Donald and his wife Lou Femia of Ouray, CO, Marie and her husband Fred Bishop of Oxnard, CA and Carol and her husband Tom Bernard of Santa Clarita, CA.

They lovingly referred to her as Mama Mia and remained very close to her through the years. She lived with her beloved Dom in Amherst, NH before settling by the ocean in Brewster, MA. They had a second home in Stuart, FL where they spent winters. They were very social and enjoyed traveling and she never passed on a chance to play bridge with some of her many close friends. She felt a deep loss in 1989 when Dom passed but was able to find love again when reunited with Maurice Hutcherson, a close friend of theirs from Stuart. FL. Florence and Maurice moved back to Massachusetts where they lived at Heatherwood in Yarmouthport.

Florence has left behind a legacy of five generations. A dear grandson, Dana McClelland of Blackstone and grand daughter, Susan and her husband Shinobu Ito of Bellingham; from Sue, four great grandchildren; Heidi Denman, Alicia Pitman, Tatsuya Ito and Chiaki Ito, two great great grandchildren, Michael and Kayla; from her step daughter Carol Bernard, three grandchildren; Leslie, Kim and David.

She was a vibrant, strong woman with deep faith and a kind heart who will be missed by many.
