School music news: Top musicians selected for Symphony Hall; upcoming concerts for grades 4-12

Above: Next week, ARHS is holding a choral concert and art show. The following week’s concert will spotlight instruments. (past concert images from Facebook)

Algonquin has musical accomplishments to boast and NSMA has news to share. The following items are from the APTO’s February newsletter:

All-State music stars heading to Symphony Hall

After an intense round of auditions, seven Algonquin students have been selected for the 2018 Massachusetts All-State Music Festival. Students will participate in three days of rehearsal prep with the top musicians from across the state in preparations for a concert at Symphony Hall on Saturday March 3, 2018. Bravo and congratulations to:

  • Abby Barnes, clarinet
  • Christina Iverson, viola
  • Julia Kardos, voice
  • Charlie McLarnon, clarinet
  • Merry Qian, flute
  • Rhea Sathur, voice
  • Maya Sagarin, trombone

Northborough Southborough Music Association is promoting three upcoming Algonquin musical performances. The second one also features Trottier’s Big Band.

Band-O-Rama takes place on Monday, February 12th at 7pm! All Northboro and ARHS bands from grades 5-12 will perform in the ARHS gym! The Band-ORama concert is a vertical, audio snapshot of the instrumental music curriculum that quickly takes the audience through the progression of learning music from grades 5-12. Due to the size of the program, free tickets are issued to families with band students directly. A ticket request form will be given to students and tickets will be given to students on a first come, first serve basis as they return the forms to school. The ticket request form should be returned to school with the youngest child enrolled in the band program for grades 5-12.

Jazz Night: ARHS hosts its annual Jazz Night concert on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00pm. The event will feature both ARHS Jazz bands, the ARHS Jazz Chorus, and the jazz bands from Melican and Trottier. This year’s guest artist is Mark Zaleski, a professional jazz saxophonist who is currently on the faculty at Berklee College of Music and Longy School of Music at Bard College. He has performed with a diverse group of notable artists including Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Ian Anderson, Connie Francis, Mahmoud Ahmed, Rakalam Bob Moses, the Either/Orchestra, Jason Palmer, and Matt Savage

Massachusetts Association for Jazz Educators (MAJE) takes place on Wednesday, March 7th at ARHS. Catch our two jazz bands as they compete for the chance to perform at the Hatch Shell this spring! Performance times to be announced on the NSMA Facebook page. As this is an MAJE event (and not an ARHS concert) please note that your NSMA membership does not grant entrance to this event. There is a small entrance fee collected at the door that supports jazz education in the state.

**I’m unsure if Trottier’s MAJE performance is just for Big Band or also Stage Band. I’ll update that info when I hear back.
