Southborough Celebrating Parks & Rec month – Free/Discounted Fun in July (Updated-Again)

I have more great save the dates for this summer! Last night, Southborough Recreation announced special free and discounted outdoor events being offered in July.

It’s the Town’s participation in National Parks & Recreation month.* Most of the events are family friendly – but not all are exclusively geared to families with little ones. There’s also fun for adults.

Some of these are events that I’ve previously shared in other posts. But some were news to me – like discounted Golf, Face Painting on the playgrounds, and free Yoga.

Unless otherwise noted below, the events are paid for by Southborough Recreation as part of their way of giving back to the community. The funding is possible thanks to other fees collected by Recreation over the year.

Below is the list of events. You can also open a printable pdf calendar here.

*A Rec announcement explained:

Since 1985, people in the United States have celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation and to recognize the more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals — along with hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers — that maintain our country’s local, state and community parks.

Through efforts by the National Recreation and Parks Association, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an official resolution for Park and Recreation Month in 2009 and introduced the resolution in 2017 and 2018.

Park and recreation agencies across the country are recognizing the month with summer programs, events, contests, commemorations and celebrations. The services that park and recreation professionals provide are vital for our communities — from protecting open space and natural resources to helping fight obesity and providing activities and resources for all people. This has been especially true throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Park and Recreation Month encourages everyone to reflect on the exponential value park and recreation professionals bring to communities.

**The Summer Movie Series will include an ice cream truck. The Summer Concert Series will include lawn games (sponsored by Friends of Southborough Recreation) and food trucks. You can find more details about that here.

Updated (6/23/22 11:33 am): I revised the information about program funding and sponsorship (based on a clarifying email exchange with Rec Director Tim Davis).

Updated (6/23/22 11:09 pm): The Rec website had listed golf as on Mondays. But the first day is July 5th, consistent with the calendar showing the golf discount on Tuesdays. I got confirmation that Tuesdays is the correct date (and Rec was updating its website to reflect that.)
