This week is packed with Farm events (including by Moonlight), Art on Trails Poetry Walk, NSPAC Playground Meetup, return of Library's story times/music for tikes, a Crafternoon for tweens, creative sessions/labs for teens, knitting for adults, a matinee for seniors, and more

Saturday, September 10, 2022

  • Join Scouting Day (12:00 – 2:00 pm) @ Pavilion behind Finn School, 60 Richards Rd: All children entering K-5th Grade are welcome to come out to try Pinewood Derby race cars and learn about Cub Scouts. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Chestnut Hill by Moonlight: A Compass and the Corn Moon (7:00 – 8:30 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Pre-registration (and fee) required. Learn to navigate by compass in the waning daylight hours as we approach the autumn equinox, then practice your navigation skills on a guided moonlit hike. For details, see related post.

  • Art on the Trails Poetry Walk (3:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Beals Preserve: Closing Poetry Reading and Reception. The closing ceremony for the 2022 Art on the Trails exhibit will feature Poets reading their work along the trail in response to art installations. For details, see dedicated post.
  • NSPAC Playground Meetup for families (4:00 – 6:00 pm) @ Assabet Park, 20 Gale St, Northborough: A free social event sponsored by NSPAC: Northborough / Southborough Special Education Parent Advisory Council. Meet and chat with fellow parents of students with disabilities while your child enjoys meeting friends and some end of summer fun. NSPAC will provide snacks and drinks.

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: This week launches the new year of story times. Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Ages 2-5 years and their parents or caregivers. No registration required. (Mondays & Tuesdays through most of the school year.)
  • Creativity Club (3:30 – 4:30 pm) @ Southborough, Library Teen Room: Young adults ages 12 to 18 are invited to drop-in to work on creative projects. Craft materials will be available and writing prompts and projects provided. No pre-registration required.

  • Book Bugs: Farm Fun for Little Ones (10:00 – 11:00 am) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Pre-registration (and fee) required. For ages 2 to 5 years old, adult supervision required (siblings under 2 yrs old can attend for free). Bring your little bug to the farm for an interactive children’s story time. We’ll read a farm story, make a craft, and explore the farm! Each day will have a different theme. (Biweekly program.) For details, see related post.
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: This week launches the new year of story times. Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme.   • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Tuesday Tech Time (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: Each week, library staff and teen volunteers will make every effort to assist patrons with technology questions. Bring questions about ebooks and electronic resources. This is a drop in event; no registrations necessary. 
  • Select Board Office Hours (6:00 – 7:00 pm) @ Town House Hearing Room, 17 Common St: Residents are invited to drop in to informally speak with two Board members about any questions, concerns or interests. This session will be hosted by members Chelsea Malinowski and Sam Stivers.
  • Poetry Workshop (6:30 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, main level: Bring in five copies of original poetry to share. The group will provide supportive feedback. If you don’t have a poem, come anyway and share your insights.

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Southborough cemetery, 11 Cordaville Road: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Kids Jam (11:00 – 11:30 am) @ Southborough Library Lawn: Weekly program from this summer returns on a new day for the fall. It features traditional and popular children’s songs suitable for newborns through preschool age. Drop-In, no registration necessary. Children must be accompanied by parent/caregiver. (The outdoor event will be cancelled if it rains.)
  • Elder Law Advice (10:00 – 10:45 am) @ phone or zoom: Southborough seniors can sign up for a free 15 minute session of individualized legal advice from an Elder Law attorney. For details, see the Senior Center’s newsletter, p. 10.
  • Senior Lunch & Matinee (12:00/12:30 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Pre-registration is required (and it may be full). The free movie screening at 12:30 pm will be preceded by an optional lunch. (Bring your own or buy one.) The movie will be “Downton Abbey – A New Era”. (It’s the 2nd movie sequel to the popular British historical drama series about an aristocratic family and servants.) For details, see the Senior Center’s newsletter, p. 8.
  • Crafternoon: Decorate Your Own Pouch (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: Free craft program for ages 8+. Using various media such as embroidery floss/needle, fabric markers or paint, personalize your very own zipper pouch that can be used as a pencil case, make-up bag or whatever you need it to carry! Pre-registration is required and attendance limited.

  • Mah Jongg (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: The weekly program would love new players to join. Feel free to stop by to watch or talk to one of the players to see if you would be interested. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Baby/Toddler Storytime (11:00 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: This week launches the new year of story times. This story time is for children age 0-2 years and their parents or caregivers. Each session will include puppets, stories, and music. No registration required.
  • ARHS Parent Teacher Open House (time) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Event for parents to learn more about their kids’ classes. Parents should print out students’ schedules to “follow”.
  • Genealogy Club (7:00 – 8:00 pm) @ where: Monthly informal group meeting to learn and share tips about resources for researching family history. Free and open to the public. Bring your laptop, log into Ancestry.com and join in.

  • Dull Men’s Club (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: Casual social club for senior men. New members are always welcome to drop in. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Senior Center Book Club (1:00 – 2:30 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: This monthly book club is run by the Senior Center. For this session, the selection is The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes. Please call the Senior Center to sign up at 508-229-4453.
  • NEF’s Applefest Gala (7:30 – 11:30 pm) @ Juniper Hills Golf Course, Northborough: “Cocktails and Dancing Under the Stars” fundraiser for Northborough Education Foundation. (NEF’s grants support Northborough’s public schools, including Algonquin Regional High School.) For details, see related post.

  • Hike with Goats (9:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: All ages/family – 60 minute window – pick a time slot. Take a leisurely hike through Chestnut Hill Farm’s beautiful grounds and trails, accompanied by one or more of our friendly goats! Pre-registration (and fee) required. (Weekly on Saturdays and Sundays.) For details, see related post.
  • Applefest Street Fair (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) @ Blake Street, Northborough: Crafts, Vendors, Local Businesses and Community Groups (including groups from Algonquin and Northborough-Southborough youth sports teams), Food and Music. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Northborough. For details, see related post.
  • Open Lab for Ideas (10:30 – 12:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, Teen Room: Biweekly program for 12-18 yr olds to explore how they can use Library equipment to take creative project ideas and make them a reality.
  • Read to a Dog (11:00 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library: Program preferably for kids ages 5 and up with some reading ability. Each month, children can sign up to read a short book to a certified therapy dog. Register at the Children’s Room desk or by contacting kivers@southboroughma.com or 508-485-5031.
  • Sit & Knit (2:00 – 4:00pm) @ Southborough Library: New biweekly program for ages 18+ to drop in and work on your latest knitting or crochet projects while you enjoy the company of fellow yarn crafters in a relaxed social setting. All levels are welcome but no formal instruction will be given.
  • Applefest BBQ, Fireworks, Concert and Family Fun (5:00 – 9:00 pm) @ Algonquin, 79 Bartlett Street, Northborough: ($10 parking per car). The festival with music, food, and free kids activities includes demos held by the Algonquin Robotics Team. For details, see related post.
