Obituary: Paul A. McGowan – December 5, 2011

Brigadier General Paul A. McGowan, 87 years old, of Framingham, died on Monday December 5, 2011 at St. Patricks Manor in Framingham. He was the husband of Mary E. (OConnell) McGowan for 59 years.

Born in Medford, son of the late John A. and Ellen (Reagan) McGowan Sr., he had been a resident of Framingham for over fifty years. He was a graduate of Medford High School and Boston College Class of 1949 and also earned a Masters Degree in Education at Boston College. A US Army veteran of World War II, he received numerous commendations and medals for his distinguished service. He continued his military career as a member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, rising to the rank of Brigadier General and Director, State Area Command (STARC), Massachusetts Army National Guard. Prior to retirement, he had been a Mathematics Teacher a Natick High School from 1964 until 1989.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Paul A. McGowan Jr. and his wife Carol of Southborough; one daughter, Jean Woodford and her husband James of East Douglas, 3 grandchildren, Alisa McGowan, Kelsey McGowan and Angela Woodford. He was brother of the late Dr. John McGowan.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday December 9, 2011 at 10:00 in St. Linus Church, 119 Hartford Street., Natick. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will follow in St. Patricks Cemetery in Natick. Calling hours at the Eugene J. McCarthy and Sons Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St., Framingham will be on Thursday December 8, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 220 N. Main Street, Natick, MA 01760.
