For the second year in a row, the Algonquin girls field hockey team is going to the district finals, after beating Groton-Dunstable in the semifinals yesterday by a score of 3-0. Southborough resident Chris Wraight was at the game and sent in this recap:

Scoreless first half, but ARHS dominated. Thirty seconds into the second half, league MVP Elizabeth Holmes scored, and then scored the second goal with an assist by Maggie Wraight. Maggie then scored the third goal with less than two minutes left, and ARHS won 3-0.

The second-seed Algonquin girls, who are the defending district champs, will take on top-ranked Wachusett in the Central Division 1 championship game on Thursday at Foley Stadium in Worcester. The game starts at 7:00 pm.

In other postseason news, both the Algonquin boys and girls soccer teams won their district quarterfinal matches yesterday to advance to the semifinals. The boys topped Tantasqua by a score of 4-0. Next they’ll face the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal game between Shrewsbury and Worcester South. The date and time of their semifinal match has not yet been announced, but I’ll let you know when it is.

In their quarterfinal match last night, the Algonquin girls soccer team handily beat Quabbin by a score of 5-0. Second-seed Algonquin will take on third-seed Shrewsbury in what is sure to be an exciting semifinal rematch. Algonquin suffered a heartbreaking loss on penalty kicks to Shrewsbury in last year’s semis, so no doubt they’ll be going into this year’s game fired up. The match starts on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at Foley Stadium.

Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as well for the Assabet girls soccer team who yesterday lost their Central Division 3 quarterfinal game against St. Bernard’s by a score of 1-0.

Finally, a reminder that the Algonquin girls volleyball team takes on Shepherd Hill in their district quarterfinals today at 5:00 pm at Shepherd Hill.

Update 3:00 pm: The volleyball game tonight is at Shepherd Hill, not at Algonquin as I originally reported.
