Here are highlights of what’s happening around (or related to) our town this weekend through next weekend.

NSW forecast for 3/4/23Worth highlighting – the Southborough Library will be closed this Saturday, due to the forecast 6-8″ of snow in Southborough overnight into tomorrow. 

That means that the Music event and Knitting program are cancelled for tomorrow. The virtual cooking program is still on.

Meanwhile, tonight is the kickoff of the annual Unplug Day where the community is encouraged to disconnect from screens sunset through sunset.

  • National Day of Unplugging (sunset today to sunset tomorrow): Southborough Youth and Family Services encourages residents to take part in National Day of Unplugging “to carve out precious time to unplug, relax, reflect, be active, visit the outdoors, and connect with loved ones.”
  • Family Game Night (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Woodward Elementary School, 28 Cordaville Rd: Event to kick off National Day of Unplugging, sponsored by Southborough Youth & Family Services. The event will feature games and Music by Brite House DJs. Concessions and pizza sold by Friends of the Southborough Youth Commission to support the Summer Camp Scholarship program..   • Recital (7:30 pm) @ St. Mark’s School, Putnam Family Arts Center, Class of ’45 Hall: Free concert by Baritone Jason Hwang ’18 and Pianist Jeremy Chan, featuring works by Schubert, Schumann, Bizet, Ives, and Tosti. For details, see flyer.

  • Southborough Library is closed due to forecast
  • National Day of Unplugging (through sunset): Southborough Youth and Family Services encourages residents to take part in National Day of Unplugging “to carve out precious time to unplug, relax, reflect, be active, visit the outdoors, and connect with loved ones.”
  • Virtual Moroccan Pastilla Cooking Lesson (12:00 – 2:00 pm) @ zoom: Part of the Southborough Library’s free virtual cooking series. Pre-registration is required, and registered participants will receive a shopping list in advance to prepare for the class. For details, see related post.
  • Chestnut Hill by Moonlight (time) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Uncovering Spring by the Full Worm Moon. Guided moonlit hike by a Trustees of Reservations Ranger. Pre-registration (and fee) required. For details, see related post.

  • Southborough Rec Summer Camp registration opens for residents (7:00 am): For details, see dedicated post.
  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Ages 2-5 years and their parents or caregivers. No registration required. (Mondays & Tuesdays through most of the school year.)
  • Youth Writing Club (3:30 – 4:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, Teen Room: Weekly Library program for youth ages 11-18. Participants are invited to come share ideas and practice writing skills in a supportive environment. No sign up necessary.

  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Ages 2-5 years old and their parents or caregivers. No registration required. (Mondays & Tuesdays through most of the school year.)
  • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • ARHS Spring Sports Night (6:30 pm) @ Algonquin: Event for parent of students signed up for Algonquin spring sports.
  • Cook Book Club (6:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: Each month, participants are encouraged to pick a recipe to make from a selected cookbook. Bring the dish to share at a gathering at the Library. New participants encouraged and all ages and partners welcome. The selection for this month’s meeting of the club is Cook This Book by Molly Baz.   • Geeks Who Drink Trivia Night (8:00 – 10:00 pm) @ Owen O’Leary’s, 50 Turnpike Rd: Weekly Trivia game night with prizes. For details, see dedicated post.

  • FSYC’s March Munchie Madness @ Nan’s Kitchen: A portion of today’s dine in and takeout sales from the restaurant will be donated to Friends of Southborough Youth Commission (raising funds for their annual Camp Scholarships and the annual Winter Wishes programs). For details, see dedicated post.

  • Elder Law Advice (10:00 – 10:45 am) @ phone or zoom: Southborough seniors can sign up for a free 15 minute session of individualized legal advice from an Elder Law attorney. For details, see the Senior Center’s newsletter, p. 10.
  • Movie Matinee: Elvis (12:30 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Pre-registration is required (and it may be full). Free screening of the 2022 biopic starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Optional meal at noon (suggested fee $6.) For details, see the Senior Center’s newsletter, p.6

  • Outdoor Seed Exchange event (11:00 am – 1:00 pm) @ Southborough Library lawn: Choose vegetable, herb and/or flower seed packets to plant in your home garden. There will be a new Story Walk title on exhibit and children activities.
  • Celtic Chocolate (1:00 – 2:30 pm) @Southborough Library, main floor: Learn the history of chocolate in Ireland, Irish chocolate pioneers, Irish lore, famous Irish foods, & Irish poetry. Includes samplings of Irish tea, Irish break, and Celtic chocolates. No registration required.
  • All About Sheep and Wool (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Program for children ages 4+. Pre-registration (and fee) required. Learn about the journey from sheep to sweater.   • Southborough Safe Spaces – Collage Art Night (7:00 – 9:00 pm) @ Pilgrim Church, 15 Common St: Event for grades 6-12 hosted by Southborough Safe Spaces for LBGTQ+ youth of all faiths and their allies. Get crafty and make a board of artistic creation, visions, pleasing aesthetics, whatever you want! Dinner included, donations welcome.   • AVM Chambersingers Concert (3:30 – 4:30 pm) @ Fay School, Harris Auditorium: “Turn the World Around: Songs of Hope & Laughter” concert by a small ensemble selected from the Assabet Valley Mastersingers. The concert is “Pay-What-You-Wish” at the door.
