Town Clerk may be shifted to an appointed position without going to the Town ballot

Special Town Meeting authorized the Select Board to ask the state to make the change rather than leaving it up to Town Election voters.

[Editor’s Note: As you’ll see in my recap, this story involves my own actions — in the form of an amendment I proposed but failed to convince other voters to pass.]

At Saturday’s Special Town Meeting, voters overwhelmingly supported converting the position of Town Clerk from elected to an appointed job that reports the Select Board.

Town Meeting voters first rejected a proposed amendment (by me) to ratify the change through the next Town election. The passage of Article 1 authorized the Select Board to petition the state legislature to enact the change. Special Town Meeting results

Voters rejected a zoning change, but approved increasing CPA funding to complete the Golf Course Irrigation Project and Peninsula Trail connecting footbridge.

Former Deputy Town Clerk appointed as Interim Town Clerk

Effective October 1st, Amy Berry will act as Southborough's Town Clerk until the next election in May.

Select Board to appoint Interim Town Clerk Friday morning

Board is keeping details from the public until their vote tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow morning, the Select Board is scheduled to appoint an Interim Town Clerk. At this stage the board is intentionally keeping mum about who they are considering appointing.

Town Meeting to vote on making the Town Clerk an appointed position (Updated)

The Article is proposed by the Town Clerk as he looks towards retirement this year. If passed, a ballot question would follow.

When Town Clerk Jim Hegarty spoke to the Select Board and Advisory Committee on Tuesday, he quipped that he was there to talk himself out of a job.
