Fall crafts for kids, Jr. Farmer, College Fair, Golf Fore ALS, History Hike, Pumpkin Stroll, and Heritage Day

Here are highlights of what’s happening around (or related to) our town through the long weekend. Reminder, this Wednesday is another day off from NSBORO schools. This time, it’s in honor of Yom Kippur.

Monday, October 3, 2022

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Ages 2-5 years and their parents or caregivers. No registration required. (Mondays & Tuesdays through most of the school year.)
  • Creativity Club (3:30 – 4:30 pm) @ Southborough, Library Teen Room: Young adults ages 12 to 18 are invited to drop-in to work on creative projects. Craft materials will be available and writing prompts and projects provided. No pre-registration required.

  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Ages 2-5 years old and their parents or caregivers. No registration required. (Mondays & Tuesdays through most of the school year.)
  • Senior Songsters (11:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ where: The Senior Center’s singing group’s weekly rehearsal. This friendly group is open to any senior who enjoys singing regardless of ability. (Those who prefer to listen can sit in.) For details, see related post.
  • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Tuesday Tech Time (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: Each week, library staff and teen volunteers will make every effort to assist patrons with technology questions. Bring questions about ebooks and electronic resources. This is a drop in event; no registrations necessary. 
  • Drop-In Crafts (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library, main level: Children age5+ are invited to make a “3-D Tree” out of paper and add leaves, animals, and birds! No registration necessary. Sponsored by the Friends of the Southborough Library.
  • Cook Book Club (6:30 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, main floor: Each month, participants are encouraged to make a recipe to share from a selected cookbook. This month’s selection is Dinner: Changing the Game by Melissa Clark. For details, see related post.

  • No School: Due to Yom Kippur, there is no public school in Southborough and Northborough today.
  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Southborough cemetery, 11 Cordaville Road: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Junior Farmer for a Day (9:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: Program for grades K-5. Give your child the experience of being a junior farmer! Help care for farm animals, learn about farm-fresh food, hike the trails, create natural crafts, and explore the farm from the eyes of its most important team member: the farmer!   • Kids Jam (11:00 – 11:30 am) @ Southborough Library Lawn: Weekly program featuring traditional and popular children’s songs suitable for newborns through preschool age. Drop-In, no registration necessary. Children must be accompanied by parent/caregiver. (The outdoor event will be cancelled if it rains.)
  • Joys of Nature & Lunch (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Pre-registration is required (and it may be full). Suggested Donation of $6 for nature presentation on Backyard Mammals preceded by lunch. For details, see the Senior Center’s newsletter, p.9.
  • Better World Book Club (5:00 – 6:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: This monthly book club run by the Southbrough Library for middle schoolers requires pre-registration. For details, see related post.
  • Southborough Rotary Club (7:30 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, main level: Regular monthly meeting of the Rotary Club of Southborough. New and prospective members are welcome.

  • Mah Jongg (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: The weekly program would love new players to join. Feel free to stop by to watch or talk to one of the players to see if you would be interested. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Baby/Toddler Storytime (11:00 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: This weekly story time is for children age 0-2 years and their parents or caregivers. Each session will include puppets, stories, and music. No registration required.
  • Reading Buddies (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Beginner readers looking for a supportive listener, and teens interested in helping young patrons gain confidence in the reading skills, are invitedt o register to be paired up through the library’s weekly program.   • ARHS College Fair (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Algonquin gym: The high school will be hosting representatives of 85+ colleges and universities for their Post Secondary College Fair. All students and parents are welcome.
  • Virtual Book Club (7:30 – 8:30 pm) @ where: Library hosted book group. Participants can chat about what they’re reading or listening to with library staff and other patrons. To sign up, email lselleck@southboroughma.com. For details, see related post.

  • Dull Men’s Club (10:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: Casual social club for senior men. New members are always welcome to drop in. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Outside Preschool Yoga (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library lawn: A free Library program for children age 3-6 with parents (siblings welcome). A Certified Kids’ Yoga Instructor will lead children through a series of yoga postures, using games, music, and literacy activities. Yoga mats will be provided. Pre-registration is required. (Weekly sessions through mid-October.)
  • Canasta (11:15 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Southborough Safe Spaces Trivia Night (7:00 – 9:00 pm) @ Pilgrim Church, 15 Common St: For grades 6-12 LBGTQ+ youth of all faiths and their allies. Dinner will be served and donations appreciated. (For more information on the group see their website and Facebook page.)

  • Hike with Goats (9:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: All ages/family – 60 minute window – pick a time slot. Take a leisurely hike through Chestnut Hill Farm’s beautiful grounds and trails, accompanied by one or more of our friendly goats! Pre-registration (and fee) required.   • Spooky Hunters of the Night (6:30 – 8:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: description. Pre-registration (and fee) required. On this spooky moonlit evening, we will search for nocturnal hunters. Search for bat silhouettes against a glowing orange harvest moon and learn about owl calls in hopes that you’ll hear a feathered hunter on your hike. For details, see related post.

  • History Hike on New Peninisula Trail (10:00 am) @ Fayville Park, Central Street: Join the Trails Committee and Mass DCR for a guided history hike to celebrate the recently opened section of the Boroughs Loop/Aqueduct Trail (a.k.a Peninsula Trail).   • Pumpkin Stroll drop-off (4:00 – 6:00 pm) @ Common Street: Drop-off your carved or decorated contributions to the pumpkin display on the stone wall around the Old Burial Grounds. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Pumpkin Stroll (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ line up begins in front of 25 Main Street: The community is invited to view the big display of jack-o-lanterns lined up on the stone wall around the Old Burial Ground. The annual event is hosted by Southborough Rotary, whose members will be collecting specific items for the Food Pantry. For details, see dedicated post.

Heritage Day, Monday, October 10, 2022

  • State holiday (for Columbus Day / Indigenous People’s Day): No public school. Town offices, Senior Center, and Library are closed.
  • Golf Fore ALS @ Southborough Golf Club: Half of all greens fees during the holiday weekend will be donated to ALS research and care in memory of Brian Shifrin and John Wilson. Click here to book a tee time. Stay tuned for dedicated post with more details.
  • Heritage Day on the St. Mark’s field (at the intersection of routes 30 & 85) and nearby locations: The the annual town celebration of our community. While it honors the town’s history, it is rooted in the present, bringing together different segments of the community. For details, see dedicated thread.
    • Southborough Gardeners floral demonstrations (9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 am) @ booth on St. Mark’s Field: Members will demonstrate how to create floral arrangements. One of the viewing attendees will get to take the arrangements home for free. For details, see dedicated post.
    • Parade (10:00 am) departs from St. Anne’s Church on Boston Road, proceeds down Main Street, ending at Marlborough Road and St. Mark’s Street: Participants include officials, veterans, school bands, youth groups, and many community groups. (To register your group to march, click here.)
    • KofC Soccer Challenge (10:00 am – 1:00 pm) @ St. Mark’s Field: The Knights of Columbus’ annual penalty kick challenge for kids. This year, the free contest is open to 6-16 year olds. Stay tuned for dedicated post with more details.
    • Friends of Southborough Library Book & Bake Sale (10:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Southborough Library parking lot: One free book per child. Selling used hardcover and paperback fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, and CDs. There will also be a Bake Sale table and a table selling games for children and families. Stay tuned for dedicated post with more details.
    • Southborough Village Society Centennial (11:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Community House, 28 Main Street: The Village Society is celebrating its 100th year of overseeing the Southborough Community House. They are inviting the public to learn about the building’s history (at 11:00 am) followed by tours of the facility. Stay tuned for dedicated post with more details.
    • Southborough Safe Spaces Anniversary party/open house (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Pilgrim Church, 15 Common St:  The group supporting LGBTQ+ youth and allies is celebrating it’s anniversary with a wine and cheese reception for the community. Join them for a talk about the beginning & growth of the group, what they do and why and to watch their video, ‘Voices Carry; Procuring Hope for LGBTQ Youth’. Updated (10/4/22 8:32 am): I added the Safe Spaces event on Monday. I have a feeling that I may be learning about more events/activities planned for Heritage Day as it gets closer.
