Friday, November 18, 2022

  • Friendsgiving (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Pilgrim Church, 15 Common St: Family Friendsgiving Celebration held by Southborough Safe Spaces (a support group for LGBTQ+ youth and allies). Bring a side to share, we’ll provide the turkey! Click here for details.
  • Guys and Dolls from ARHS tweetARHS’ Musical – Guys and Dolls (7:00 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School auditorium, 79 Bartlett St, Northborough: Gonk Stage is excited to present Guys and Dolls, “a family-friendly classic musical comedy”.   • First Community Pie Sale (8:00 am) @ in front of Mauro’s Village Cafe, 2 Main St: Volunteers raising funds for First Community Church will sell pies and other baked goods. They’ll be there until 11:00 am, or until they run out.
  • Winter Coat Collection (8:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Transfer Station: Southborough Rotary Club will be collecting new/gently used winter coats for community members who need them. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Electronic, Appliance, and Bicycle Recycle Day (9:00 am – 2:00 pm) @ Saint Anne’s Church parking lot, 20 Boston Road: Recycle Electronics and Appliances for a fee (cash or check), plus some items collected for free, including bicycles. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to St. Anne’s Church. For details see post on the prior event in May.
  • Holiday Shopping Fair and Photo Shoot (9:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Southborough Community House, 28 Main Street: Shop from local artists and craftspeople and buy gifts for the holiday season. While you are there, have your holiday photo shoot. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Cub Scout Wreath and Candle Sale (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) @ Transfer Station: Southborough Cub Scouts will be selling holiday wreaths and Hanukkah candles For details, see dedicated post.
  • Dodgeball Tournament (10:00 am – 7:30 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School gym, 79 Bartlett St, Northborough: Co-ed dodgeball competition for grades 1-8 run by ARHS Boys Hockey. (If you missed the registration deadline, you can still cheer on friends.) For details, see dedicated post.
  • Open Lab for Ideas (10:30 – 12:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, Teen Room: Biweekly program for 12-18 yr olds to explore how they can use Library equipment to take creative project ideas and make them a reality.
  • Read to a Dog (11:00 – 11:45 am) @ Southborough Library: Program preferably for kids ages 5 and up with some reading ability. Each month, children can sign up to read a short book to a certified therapy dog. Register at the Children’s Room desk or by contacting kivers@southboroughma.com or 508-485-5031.
  • ARHS Girls Soccer in State Finals (1:00 pm) @ Walpole High: Algonquin is playing in the Division 1 State Championship Final match. For details, see dedicated post. (Send off Rally in Algonquin’s parking lot is at 10:00 am.)
  • Sit & Knit (2:00 – 4:00pm) @ Southborough Library: Biweekly program for ages 18+ to drop in and work on your latest knitting or crochet projects while you enjoy the company of fellow yarn crafters in a relaxed social setting. All levels are welcome but no formal instruction will be given.

  • Thanksgiving Interfaith Gathering (7:00 pm) @ St. Mark’s Parish Hall and Church, 27 Main St: Join Southborough Neighbors for Peace and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for an Interfaith services followed by a dessert reception. Donations are welcome for the Southborough Food Pantry. (See current needs list here.)

Monday, November 21, 2022

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Ages 2-5 years and their parents or caregivers. No registration required. (Mondays & Tuesdays through most of the school year.)
  • Bereavement Group (1:00 – 2: 00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: The Bereavement Group is a monthly support group is for ages 50 and older. To sign up to join the group, please call Leslie Chamberlin, R.N. at 508-229-4453.
  • Cancelled [The Southborough Library was forced to close early due to loss of heat!] – Creativity Club (3:30 – 4:30 pm) @ Southborough, Library Teen Room: Young adults ages 12 to 18 are invited to drop-in to work on creative projects. Craft materials will be available and writing prompts and projects provided. No pre-registration required.
  • ARHS Winter Sports Night (6:30 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Meeting for parents to learn about this winter’s student athletics program. A presentation in the auditorium is followed by smaller breakout meetings for each team.

  • Southborough Gardeners’ Greens Workshop (10:00 am) @ St. Mark’s Church’s Stevens Hall (27 Main Street): A workshop to create Holiday Arrangements of Assorted Flowers and Greenery. Registration and a fee are required. For details, see dedicated post
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. Ages 2-5 years old and their parents or caregivers. No registration required. (Mondays & Tuesdays through most of the school year.)
  • Senior Songsters (11:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ where: The Senior Center’s singing group’s weekly rehearsal. This friendly group is open to any senior who enjoys singing regardless of ability. (Those who prefer to listen can sit in.) For details, see related post.
  • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Tuesday Tech Time (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: Each week, library staff and teen volunteers will make every effort to assist patrons with technology questions. Bring questions about ebooks and electronic resources. This is a drop in event; no registrations necessary. 
  • Mystery & Puzzle Book Club (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library, main level: This monthly book club run by the Southborough Library for grades 2- requires pre-registration. For details, see related post.
  • Poetry Workshop (6:30 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, main level: Bring in five copies of original poetry to share. The group will provide supportive feedback. If you don’t have a poem, come anyway and share your insights. (Meets twice monthly.)

(The Senior Center’s is at noon, while early dismissals vary by school. Other Town offices will follow their regular hours)

Thursday, November 24, 2022 — Thanksgiving

  • Thanksgiving Closures: The public schools, Southborough Library, Senior Center, Town offices and the Transfer Station are closed for the holiday.
  • Gobble Wobble @ Trottier Middle School, 49 Parkerville Road: The popular annual 5k timed race and 2 Mile walk to raise funds for Friends of Southborough Recreation. Registration opens at 7:00 am for the 8:30 am race. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Thanksgiving Day Football Game (10:00 am) @ Algonquin Regional High School, 79 Bartlett St, Northborough: The annual rivalry match between our regional high school and neighboring Westborough is hosted by the Titans this year.

  • Thanksgiving Closures: The public schools, Southborough Library, Senior Center, Town offices and Transfer Station are still closed for the holiday.
  • Town facilities closed: The Southborough Library, Senior Center and Transfer Station are closed today.
  • Green Friday Hike (10:00 – 11:30 am) @ Chestnut Hill Farm: An eco-friendly way to spend the day after Thanksgiving — going on a guided hike to learn how different types of plants and animals cope with the universal changes the land undergoes as the seasons evolve. Participants are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the farm afterward. Pre-registration (and fee) required. For details, click here.
  • Gulbankian Holiday Open House (6:00 – 9:00 pm) @ Gulbankian Florist, 40 Mt Vickery Rd: Drop in for refreshments of Mulled Wine/cheese/crackers. Enjoy holiday music and enter raffles. (Timed to coincide with a sale on gifts and decor.) For details, click here.

  • Thanksgiving Closures: The Southborough Library and Senior Center are still closed today. (The Transfer Station has its regular Saturday hours.)
  • Small Business Saturday: It’s the time of year when the public is encouraged to make a special effort to support small businesses. Click here for my directory of Southborough businesses you can shop.
  • Cub Scout Wreath and Candle Sale (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) @ Transfer Station: Southborough Cub Scouts will be selling holiday wreaths and Hanukkah candles For details, see dedicated post.
  • SFA Christmas Trees (9:00 am – 8:00 pm) @ Southborough Golf Club parking lot (behind the public safety building at 32 Cordaville Road): The first day of Southborough Firefighters Association’s annual sale of Christmas trees. This year they will offer home delivery to residents for an additional $10.
  • DIY Rustic Wooden Box workshop (3:00 – 4:30 pm) @ Gulbankian Florist, 40 Mt Vickery Rd: There is a registration fee and attendance is limited. Click here for details.

Updated (11/21/22 12:34 pm): Unexpectedly, the Southborough Library has to close early due to a failure in the heating system. They are closing at 1:00 pm. (At this point, they hope to reopen on time on Tuesday. I will update this post if I learn that changes.)
